Four ways to keep a gutter clear

Aluminium mesh, plastic mesh, bristle brush and the downpipe guards, plus the ladder, scoop, sleeves and gloves that make the job a morning rather than an ordeal.

Water through, leaves out

Every guard here does one job: rain keeps going into the gutter and leaf litter, twigs and roof grit stay on top. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why mesh size matters more than any other number on the page.

Sold by the length you need

The aluminium mesh is sold by the metre with no minimum, so a nine metre run costs nine metres. The plastic mesh comes on a six metre roll and the brush in four metre lengths.

Fits without a fitter

Aluminium cuts with tin snips, plastic mesh cuts with scissors, the brush pushes in and the downpipe guards drop in by hand. Nothing here needs a trade, which is the point.

Covers the part that actually blocks

A gutter usually overflows because the downpipe outlet is packed, not because the channel is. The stainless domes cover the one part of the system you cannot see from the ground.

Materials matched to the job

Aluminium where you want something that will not rust or burn. Plastic mesh where the run curves. Brush where the gutter has a sag in it and nothing rigid will sit flat.

The kit to do it safely

A telescopic ladder that stores in a cupboard, a scoop and pole to clear the gutter first, level 5 cut resistant sleeves and cowhide gloves for the cut mesh edge.

Listed by the job people buy them for. Free delivery across the UK on orders over £100.

Protect Your Home with the Best Gutter Guards

Gutters play a crucial role in protecting your home from water damage. However, they can quickly become clogged with leaves, twigs, and debris, leading to potential blockages and costly repairs. Installing the best gutter guards is the most effective solution to keep your gutters clean and free-flowing. Whether you're looking for the best leaf guards for gutters or the best gutter covers, we have the perfect solutions for you. Let’s explore how the right gutter guards can protect your home.

Why You Need the Best Gutter Guards

The best gutter guards offer a wide range of benefits that go beyond simply preventing debris buildup. Here’s why you should consider installing high-quality gutter protection:

  • Prevents Clogging: The main job of gutter covers is to stop leaves, twigs, and other debris from clogging your gutters. With the right leaf guards for gutters, you won’t have to worry about cleaning your gutters as often.
  • Prevents Water Damage: Clogged gutters can lead to water overflow, causing significant damage to your roof, foundation, and landscaping. Installing the best gutter covers ensures proper water flow, preventing costly repairs.
  • Reduces Maintenance: With the best gutter guard system in place, you won’t have to spend hours on ladder cleaning your gutters. Gutter guards make maintenance much easier and less frequent.
  • Improves Longevity: By protecting your gutters from debris buildup, the best gutter covers help to extend the lifespan of your gutters and other roofing components.

Features of the Best Leaf Guards for Gutters

Not all gutter guards are created equal. To ensure you're getting the best protection for your home, look for the following features in your leaf guards for gutters:

  • Durability: The best leaf guards are made from high-quality materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, or copper, ensuring they can withstand harsh weather conditions and provide long-lasting protection.
  • Mesh Design: Many of the best gutter guards use a fine mesh design that effectively keeps out leaves and other debris while allowing water to flow freely into the gutters.
  • Easy Installation: Look for gutter guards that are easy to install. Many of the top-rated gutter covers come with simple snap-on or clip-on designs that don’t require professional installation.
  • Weather Resistance: Ensure that the leaf guards you choose are weather-resistant, capable of handling heavy rains, snow, and wind without warping or deteriorating.

What Makes the Best Gutter Covers?

Choosing the best gutter covers for your home requires considering a few important factors. Here’s what makes the best gutter covers stand out from the rest:

  • Effective Debris Prevention: The best gutter covers are designed with a tight-fitting screen or mesh that prevents debris from entering the gutter while allowing rainwater to flow through easily.
  • Long-Term Performance: High-quality gutter covers are built to last. They won’t warp, bend, or break over time, ensuring reliable protection year after year.
  • Compatibility: The best gutter covers are compatible with a variety of gutter types, from K-style to half-round gutters, making it easy to find a solution that fits your system.
  • Low Maintenance: One of the key features of the best gutter covers is their low-maintenance nature. They drastically reduce the need for frequent gutter cleaning, saving you time and effort.

Benefits of Installing Gutter Guards

Installing gutter guards or gutter covers provides numerous benefits for homeowners. Here’s why they’re a smart investment:

  • Protection from Water Damage: Gutter guards prevent water from overflowing and causing damage to your foundation, landscaping, and roof, protecting your home from costly repairs.
  • Prevents Pest Infestation: When gutters are clogged, they become a breeding ground for pests such as mosquitoes, ants, and rodents. Gutter guards prevent debris accumulation, reducing the likelihood of pest infestations.
  • Improves Gutter Efficiency: Gutter guards help ensure that rainwater flows smoothly through your gutters, improving the overall efficiency of your drainage system.
  • Enhances Curb Appeal: Clean, well-maintained gutters with the help of gutter covers improve the overall appearance of your home and prevent unsightly gutter overflow or stains.

How to Choose the Best Gutter Guard for Your Home

Choosing the right gutter guard for your home depends on a variety of factors, including your local climate, the size of your gutters, and your maintenance preferences. Here are some tips to help you choose the best option:

  • Consider Your Gutter Type: Different gutters may require different types of gutter covers. Make sure the guard you choose is compatible with the style and size of your gutters.
  • Evaluate the Mesh Size: For maximum effectiveness, choose a guard with a mesh size small enough to keep out all types of debris, but large enough to allow rainwater to flow through without blockage.
  • Think About Installation: Some leaf guards for gutters are easier to install than others. If you prefer a DIY approach, choose a model that requires minimal tools and effort.
  • Factor in Your Budget: While it’s tempting to choose the cheapest option, remember that the best gutter covers are an investment in your home’s long-term protection. Prioritize quality and durability over price.

Buying guide

Choosing a gutter guard

What a gutter guard actually does

It is a filter over an open channel. Rain passes through it and everything solid stops on top, where the wind and the next shower take most of it away. What is left is lifted off in one piece rather than scooped out of a full gutter.

Which of the four to buy

Aluminium mesh is the one to fit if you want it done properly and left alone: it will not rust, it will not burn, and the 3.5 mm by 2 mm holes hold back roof grit as well as leaves. It wants tin snips and a bit of patience over a long run.

Plastic mesh is faster and cheaper and cuts with scissors. It is the right answer over a bay, round a corner, or on a conservatory edge where a stiffer sheet will not sit flat. It is a polymer, so it is not a fire product and we do not sell it as one.

The brush is the one for a gutter that is no longer the shape it was: an old cast iron run, a visible sag, a profile a previous repair has changed. You push four metres in and the job is done, with nothing cut and nothing fixed.

The downpipe guards are not an alternative to any of those. They are the other half of the job, and they are the half most people skip.

Working out how much you need

Measure the gutter, not the wall. A gutter usually runs past the corner and round a bay, and the wall measurement is always short. For the aluminium mesh, order that many metres. For the plastic, six metres is roughly one elevation of a terrace or semi.

Fitting it

Clear the gutter first, then flush the downpipe, then fit the guard. Doing it in the other order means lifting a guard you have just put on. The gutter scoop and pole on this site is for exactly that first step.

For mesh, cut to length, bend the front edge over the gutter lip and tuck the back edge under the first course of tiles. No fixings. For the brush, push and work it along. For the downpipe guards, press until the three buckles grip inside the pipe.

Working at height

Gutter height is not high enough to frighten anyone, which is precisely why people fall off ladders at it. Set the ladder about one metre out for every four metres up, on firm level ground, and have someone foot it. Wear the gloves: a cut mesh edge is sharp.
